My Story
Hello Friend! My life changed in September of 2005. I remember that year distinctly. It was one thing after another. Our son was afraid of people and scared of things that didn’t seem frightening. He was a tip toe walker so he was continually saying his feet hurt. He would run and hide due to his sensitive hearing. He slept on the floor – that is when he did sleep! His anxiety was so bad it made him sick at times. We didn’t know what our little boy had but we were sure it wasn’t Autism. He had just started preschool and we got the diagnosis. Autism. Our son had Autism!
A week later a major storm hit our neighborhood and we were without power for 5 days! 5 DAYS! That might not seem like hard times for the average person. However, when you need to find a way to occupy your newly diagnosed 5 year old son, it feels like an insurmountable task. Fortunately, my parents lived only 15 minutes away. So we packed our things and began our in town stay-cation.
Through all our trials, I have learned there is so much more to autism than the routines and the anxiety. I have met some of my best friends because of my son’s autism.
I hope you will let me share my insights and experiences with you. Let’s work together to find your peaceful island.
